In January 2012, Alicia and Jennell were visiting their dear friend Sue, who gave them a gift of some homemade bacon blue cheese butter. It was so good, that they put it on potatoes, turkey burgers, and anything else they could find. Suddenly, they were coming up with meals centered around the bacon blue cheese compound butter.

They started making all kinds of butter using various methods and techniques.  As fast as Jennell was making the butter, Alicia was going through their spice cabinet and creating all kinds of different flavors.

They quickly had way more butter than two people could consume, so they started giving it away, and a friend said, "Why you don’t sell it at a farmers market?"

And so, with their kitchen aid mixer, they started Casco Bay Butter Company in a church kitchen in Portland, ME, and they started selling at the Kennebunk Farmers Market. Alicia’s brother Andrew joined the team shortly thereafter, and he quickly started landing some wholesale accounts.

As demand grew, they would borrow mixers from their friends on “churn nights” and line them up on the counters at the church kitchen, so they could make enough butter for that week’s orders.

That same dear friend Sue also joined the fun, and together, they now form the leadership of Casco Bay Butter.

In the summer of 2014, the team was able to open their own production space in Scarborough. They purchased their current churn, affectionately named Ben, and they continue to make happy butter.

Since it’s inception, Casco Bay Butter has been well received by fans and critics alike. They have flipped butter on its head and brought both a unique new dairy product and new specialty food to the marketplace. Here are some highlights of Casco Bay Butter’s growth and success:
